Imperial/province border

Allison actually did it. She managed to convince Madena to go out and see the world. She was terrified to say the least, for her entire life she's lived in the fort. Watching over it, making it her home and defending it from dozens of people all wanting to kill her for one reason or another over the past 10 years. She's always wanted to see the outside world, the provinces with their beautiful countrysides, that far-off country with vast deserts and sunlight that bakes the sand and stone hot enough to cook an egg on. That sounded lovely to her. The thought of being able to simple spread out on a rock and let the sunlight bake her all day simply sounded delightful. Much better than this cold imperial weather. But she figured she would leave the best for last, hence her reason for heading off to the provinces.

Her lower body was in the shape of a snake, but her upper body was still human. It was much easier to travel long distances like this than with legs, she had come to find. Unlike her usual tendency, she was actually clothed for once. She hated it, especially when she can cover herself with her scales, but it might not be that decent to have her first meeting with a stranger be 'naked'. She wore a simple cloth shirt and jacket to keep her somewhat warm while her lower body had a long skirt to cover her. With her legs it would reach past her knees...but with her snake body it was utterly useless. It must probably look somewhat comedic for a snake to be wearing a skirt. The thought made her chuckle a bit. Around her 'hip' was a belt holding both her gladius as well as a quiver full of arrows. On her back was her longbow and a backpack with all the trinkets and valuables she collected over the years from her attackers. Most of it was useless to her, but she might be able to sell it. She had never needed money before but it sounds like it's quite important in the world. Finally she had a cloak to cover herself up as well. More to cover the snakes on her head but it helped in the evenings as well.

She sailed through the forest, the trees thick but still allowing her to look up and see the odd bird flying overhead. After travelling for most of the day she decided to stop in a bit of a clearing to rest. She set her belongings down, drank a bit of water from a skin and pulled out the old map she found in the archives. It was only from 300 or so years ago...how much could have changed since then? She decided on a town called Noria. According to records and the map it was an aspiring fishing town steadily growing. Sounded like a nice place to stop.

She put the map away and coiled herself up, 'sitting' on her serpent body and catching her breath. She angled her head up and her forked tongue flicked out every few seconds to taste the air. The snakes on her head helped as extra pairs of eyes to alert her of anything behind her. Satisfied that she was all alone she laid back on her body with her hands behind her head, looking up into the beautiful blue sky and enjoying the sunlight shining down on her.

Once again Iskar left his home to go exploring more lands. This time his travels took him to the Imperial and Province border. He had been walking all day, trying to get as much ground covered as possible. As the Magi traveled now through the forest area, he was on the look out for any good spots he can use to practice his transformation spell. There was two reasons for searching for an empty location, one he didn't want anyone to panic and attack him and two there is one fact about the transformation process that causes him to make sure the area is clear. A very good reason to him anyways.

Unlike other patches of forest that he has travelled through that were frightening, though he was travelling through the other forests in the middle of the night, this forest was lit by the suns light and peaceful. There are even birds of different types flying over head. Including one odd looking one that flew just above the thick canopy of the trees. Smiling as he looked around the young man decided that it will not hurt to find a spot to stop for a quick rest. So far the man had not spotted anyone in the forest so he was a bit lax in regards to hiding his permanently scaled arm and hand. Though he has still having to learn to be careful with his clawed fingers. One too many times he had managed to cut himself with the claws that manage to only sharpen back up after filing them down a bit.

Coming to a stop, Iskar sipped some water from his canteen as the Magi looked around. Spotting a small area, the same one that Madena is at, he can use to rest his feet a bit. Heading over the man did not spot the... snake thing until he was well upon her. Coming to a stop he was a bit mesmerized by the sight of the serpent being. Never had he seen such a thing before, nor did he know such a thing existed.

Perhaps he can try to find somewhere else so he doesn't disturb her. Turning around to walk away the man winced when he accidentally stepped on a tree branch, causing it to snap. He looked over his shoulder to the serpent woman, putting his hands up to show that he meant no harm to her, "Terribly sorry. I was just passing through." He will explain quickly incase Madena questioned him.

Madena's eyes started drooping as she laid in the clearing. Between the sun warming her, the rustle of the leaves and the chirping of the birds she was in bliss. She was so lost in this moment of bliss that she didn't pay attention at first when a few snakes on the side of her head started hissing. It was only when she heard a twig snap when her eyes shot open and she sat up. As soon as she spotted the stranger she moved with blazing speed.

She grabbed her bow and drew an arrow, her body rose almost two meters off the ground, looming over the man. His head was right in her sights. Out of reflex her face started to morph into a more monstrous form, letting out a sharp and threatening hiss and showing off her enormous fangs. Likewise the snakes on her head all turned to face the stranger, hissing unanimously. Thankfully her eyes didn't start glowing, otherwise he might find himself to be 'frozen' in terror...forever.

"Who are you?! What are you doing here?!" she screamed at him. While Allison was at this point her truest and only friend, other people she was still very untrustworthy of. Especially men. 10 years of having to fight dozens of soldiers, mercenaries and hunters off on her own has given her a rather warped and xenophobic view of others. As she stared down the arrow into the man's eyes her tongue flicked into the air. Likewise she saw something peculiar about his eyes. He was a magi...and from what she could tell he was almost like her to some degree.

She slithered a bit closer to him, still maintaining her height and looming over him. Her face returned to normal but a scowl remained on her face as she kept the arrow on him. "What are you?! I've never seen any other magi with eyes like that or a scent like that, so what are you?" she asked coldly and sternly.

Iskar was honestly caught off guard by the serpent woman's reaction to his presence. He expected some confrontation but not on this level. Perhaps she has had bad experiences with men in the past. That would make sense to her reaction if that is the case. While Madena reacted.. violently with a weapon pointed at him as her face morphed into something more terrifying. Not to mention he hissing that accompanied. He was terrified, but calmed himself as the woman spoke to him. Reminding himself to remain calm and no matter what not reach for his sword. That will only make this situation worse than it is.

"My name is Iskar Cinderflame. I am a Magi from the Gemiralth Archipelago. I was just passing through. I have been exploring the lands out of curiosity as well as to find locations where I can practice a spell that originates where I am from." He will explain calmly, keeping his voice quiet. Hoping that his calm response will help the serpent woman to calm down as well. And perhaps lower her weapon.

Why was she staring at his eyes? Thank goodness she returned her face back to normal. Perhaps this will be a continuing trend. Nope never mind. It appeared that she may go back in the direction of becoming a threat if he doesn't watch his actions as well as his words.

The dragon shifter kept himself from stepping away from the Serpent as Madena got closer to him, "Like I said I am a Magi. A human. From my land we have a spell that when mastered allows a person to take the form of a dragon. Sometimes it comes with a cost. Like my eye and.." He showed her his arm that was permanently changed, "My arm." He will say last, "I am the only Magi that knows how to do the spell. There are no others."

Madena's arrow was locked onto him and her eyes were studying his every move. He explained who he was and what he was...which truthfully peeked her curiosity. He could turn into a dragon? There were records of long ago of the fort spotting dragons which naturally was simply people shape shifting into the beasts. Nevertheless, she still wanted to see them with her own eyes. What bothered her was the effects it had on him. His arm looked like hers, albeit with rougher scales and bigger claws than her. But somehow she felt a bit of a relation with the man. He was like her...to some degree.

She relaxed and lowered the bow, while still keeping the arrow knocked. Her body lowered so she was 'standing' even with him. "Simply traveling, you say?" she said more calmly, looking him over. After a few seconds of studying him she slung the bow on her shoulder and slid the arrow back in her quiver. "Alright then, I guess you can join me. Just...watch yourself." she said a bit sternly then sailed back to her spot and did something quite unexpected. Her tail shrunk into her until it reached a certain length then shaped a pair of scaly human legs. She sat on the grass, stretching her legs out in front of her and straightening her skirt out.

She still didn't trust him but if he was simply a traveller...and more importantly a dragon...she had no reason the kill him. "...So you're a dragon?" she finally said with a curious tone as she looked at him, cocking her head slightly to the side.

As he watched the serpent woman as she studied him, he noted her relaxing a bit more. He could not help releasing a sigh of relief when the arrow was no longer pointing at him. It was a bit nerve wrecking to have a weapon pointing at him at a distance that he would not have been able to do anything if the arrow was sent his way.

He nodded, "Yes. Simply traveling." He confirmed when Madena asked him, seeming to make sure he is telling the truth about simply passing through. Did she really think that he came all this way to kill her? No. That would be against his nature to hunt someone down. Especially when he didn't know until now that she existed. Watching the curious looking creature glide back over to her spot the Magi figured that while he is allowed to be around her that he'd better keep his distance. Wait.. she has legs? Well this is starting to become a bit more interesting.

Moving over towards a fallen log Iskar placed his sword and scabbard on the ground before he sat down. As the Magi took a seat on the grass his travel pack was placed next to him. Once he was comfortable and sure that he is far enough from Madena to be comfortable around him, he looked over to the serpent woman, "Yes, I am a dragon." That is if that is how she wants to describe what he is. Though he still sees himself as a human, others may not see him as such.

Madena kept her eyes on him as he placed his sword on the ground. At least a bit harder to reach than on his hip so that was fine in her book. He confirmed her question. A dragon. Sure anyone can claim that they can turn themselves into the mythical powerhouses...but with the 'deformities' with his arm and eye she was inclined to believe him. She did feel bad for describing his features like that but in the moment and given his description it was the only word she could think of.

She couldn't help but stare at him with intrigue. As if expecting him to simply turn right then and there. This was indeed like a dream come true, being able to meet one of the fabled creatures in the flesh. "...So?" she asked, half expecting something to happen. "How does it work? What do you look like? Why can't you simply turn your arm back into a normal form." she asked in rapid succession, only realizing afterward that the last one might be insensitive to ask. He said it was a consequence, which meant that it was most likely not his choice.

This conversation was indeed awkward to say the least and she realized it. She looked down out of embarrassment, felling a bit guilty over the question. "Sorry...I take it that wasn't your choice to make." she said a bit shyly. Her curiosity, however, demanded that she figure out what he looks like. "But in all seriousness...what does a dragon look like?!" she perked up with wide eyes and a small smile. "I've read of them being as big as a castle with fire hot enough to melt stone and a roar powerful enough to shake the earth." she said enthusiastically. "Is that true?" she scooted a bit closer, her eyes locked onto him. Sure she didn't trust him, but that was out of ignorance. Slowly but surely her fear was falling away.

Now it seemed that Madena was getting excited just by being around him and seeing him. Well it is better than trying to kill him for sure. He had come across a number of people who have tried to kill him or take his arm off to get the scales. This change in behavior towards him was a welcomed one of course. The Magi honestly did not mind her asking about why he can't change his arm back to normal. But with how useful the arm can be he wouldn't change it back to normal, "
It takes a series of steps at first to make the spell work. Sometimes repeating the steps until it is perfected. But the reward in the end is being able to transform into a dragon, or multiple forms of them
. The changes to my eye and arm are a result of some mistakes I made. My eye because I tried to force myself to change after seeing my first form while meditating. My arm due to trying to stay in a dragon form for longer than I could tolerate at the time." He answered calmly. Yes it was a bit much to have attention directed to what some would say are deformities but he is used to the attention in regards to it. Usually he has his arm hidden away, but well he was not expecting to come across anyone while traveling through the forest. And well the serpent has already seen his arm. So it will be pointless to hide it now.

"There is no need to apologize. You were just being curious. I say that is better than trying to take my arm off and keep it as a trophy as some have tried to do." He noted, "But I will accept your apology." Iskar tilted his head a bit. Well this is certainly the most interesting conversation he has had by far. No one has really tried going so far to get details about the spell he uses to transform into what some would call a monster, "Well to answer that.. not all dragons look the same. For example I have a couple that are what comes to mind when people think of a dragon. Then there are a couple that look nothing like what people imagine being a dragon. Same with the sizes. I have two forms that are small enough for me to sit on your shoulder. Then I have one so far that is by far the biggest. I have not been able to see myself in that form to tell you how big it really is though. I just know it is massive because animals scatter when I transform into it. And at one point it caused people in the Shifting State to panic when they heard of me in that form." The dragon shifter paused, "There is one form I have had visions of while meditating. If I achieve transforming into it.. it will be as big and powerful as you just said."

The Magi then started to wonder now after hearing all this if Madena will demand him to change form now. Honestly he hopes not. But if she does well perhaps it won't hurt to oblige her this one time since she has been so curious about it.

Madena listened intently to how he explained it. His comment about wanting to take his arm made her chuckle a bit. "Well don't feel too bad about it. People want your arm, people want my head...seems that scales attract unwanted attention." she said in a casual tone. It was slowly dawning on her that maybe, just maybe, not everyone is out to kill her.

He explained his forms, immediately catching Madena's undivided attention. Again, more similarities. She also had her forms and sizes, though nothing as big as how he describes it. But she knew she wasn't small...and she actually had a mirror set up to look herself over. Safe to say she keeps it for special occasions. Maybe she might even return the favour if he showed his form off. She was actually speechless about this encounter the more she thought of it. For the first time in her life she had someone who understood her struggle, her powers. Someone she could relate to in a manner.

"The way you describe it actually sounds very similar to what I can do...". Once again she scooted closer to him, sitting on her legs a meter or so away from him. "Umm...do you...think you can, you know...show me?" she asked a bit nervously. "I understand if you don't want to or if it's too dangerous..." she added quickly, not wanting to sound inconsiderate or rude. She would have offered to show off her own form to try and convince him, but she kept quiet on that idea. Not only did it sound extremely childish but it was something of a misuse of their powers...well not to her but most probably to him.

Iskar could not help the chuckle that escaped his lips, "Sound like the two of us have something in common." He noted, "The scales do attract unwanted attention from time to time." He looked over to the serpent, feeling more comfortable around her. She herself seemed to be trusting the Magi a bit more than when he first stumbled upon her.

The man shifted a bit on the grass, crossing his legs as he rested his arms on his lap, intrigued by the fact she can do something similar to him. Change forms. Now that is something else he did not expect to come across at all. The Magi thought that the ability to change form was unique to himself. Perhaps different places have something similar. Watching her scoot closer to him the man tilted his head in thought. Yes he won't mind transforming to show her. But which one? The Magi shrugged, "I don't mind showing you. It is just which one to transform into. If you want to see one of my larger forms we will have to find an open field somewhere. It will be too dangerous to transform into one of my big ones here. I do have a small ones I can transform into but I can't talk while in them." He told Madena. He wondered if he will be able to transform just long enough to show her, that shouldn't be an abuse of the power. Unworthy of another permanent physical change if it is. Besides it will just be long enough to show.

The Magi didn't remember coming across any open fields big enough for one of his big dragon forms. That is unless Madena knows where to find a big enough field. She will have to contend with seeing one of his smaller forms.

He didn't mind showing her. Her eyes lit up with joy as he said it. But they did lose a bit of their glow as he mentioned that he couldn't change here. She really wanted to see the big one.

She looked around the field they were in. Almost all the trees were still young and small. She could actually snap them to clear the field and even bring the bigger trees down, though that will take more effort. "Well...I could bring the trees down to make some space for you...but that can take a few minutes at least." she mentioned her idea. "There is a clearing farther back but that's about an hour's...'walk' for me." she finished with a chuckle. It appeared that she would not be able to see the big one. A real pity, considering that she was this close, but she couldn't force the poor man. She was an adult, not some bratty noble kid. Alright she was something of a noble if what her parents said was anything to go by, but that wasn't the point.

She gave a bit of a sigh. and looked back to Iskar with a smile. "Well I guess one of your smaller forms can work too." she said with a shrug of her shoulders. Either way she couldn't exactly complain. She had an opportunity to see an actual dragon! This is no time to be picky over what kind of dragon. "Beggars can't be choosers" as her mother always said. It certainly seemed to fit this situation.

Iskar looked around at their environment. Looking at the spacing between the trees. On second thought there is one form that he can change into that is big but will not bring down the entire forest on them. Maybe a few trees will be knocked over. But that is better than being buried. The shifter moved a little bit as he studied the surrounding a bit more. Not only to make sure he can change his form. But also for where he can.. discard his clothing without tearing them to shreds during the transformation, "On second thought. There is one of my bigger dragon forms that I can safely transform into without burying us under trees." Iskar told Madena.

The Magi stood up as he spotted an area he can use to prepare first, "Just.. uh give me a moment." He found himself stuttering a little bit, "There is one aspect of the transformation I have to.. prepare for first. It is much like how a person transforms into a werewolf. And.. well it destroys clothing.. so yeah give me a moment." He will say finally before cutting himself off when the man decided that he was just blabbering on like a clown hyped up on too much sugar. Clearing his throat he walked off towards the area he spotted.

Once he reached the spot Iskar came to a stop. Checking to make sure that he was not followed the man put himself into a meditation like state as he prepared himself. Hoping that the serpent woman didn't follow him. Finally as the image of the form he was planning to transform into came to his head he calmly said the word, "Paricutin..." A second or two after muttering the word so quietly, the man dropped to the ground with a pained groan as the transformation started taking place. If Madena had gone against Iskar's wish for her to stay where she was or heard his pained groans as the transformation started taking place she would have noticed his form taking shape of a dragon. In no time though Madena had a full fledged dragon before her.

As he turned around in the space that has now gotten a bit small for him, a couple of trees were accidentally knocked over. One threatening to fall onto the serpent woman. But Iskar caught the tree with his snout and shoved it in another direction to fall harmlessly to the forest floor. Now it is the young creature that is being looked down at, though Iskar made sure to lower himself so that he didn't look threatening. His reptilian eyes somewhat glowing as he looked down at her. He was half expecting her to panic at the sight of a real dragon before her. It is one thing to say you want to see one to actually having one in front of you.

Giving Madena a moment to let it all sink in he stood there silently until he decided it was time to speak up, his voice very different from his human one, "Well? What do you think?" Iskar asked noting through his new attuned senses that animals are now fleeing the area as quickly as they can to avoid becoming a meal.

Madena watched as Iskar paced around, scoping the place out. He finally mentioned a smaller form that would still be impressive, bringing that smile right back. She was about to thank him when he warned her about the effects. She blinked as few times, not understanding immediately. "Oh? Oh...OH!" she realized what he meant. "Uh, yeah! Sure, take your time!" she said a bit nervously and turned to look into the opposite direction to mind the man's privacy.

For a minute or so she waited, burning with curiosity but forcing herself not to turn around. She heard him groan in pain, finally reaching her breaking point she turned around to look at him. Her mouth hung open and her eyes went wide. His skin turned to scales. His size kept growing until finally he was towering over her. She was frozen in place, whether out of fear, shock or awe she wasn't sure, but here she was. Frozen like one of her statues. She was so caught up in this sight that when the tree came for her she barely had time to react. Out of reflex her entire figure shrunk down until she was a small snake no longer than a person's arm to evade the tree...but the shock never came.

She turned around and opened her eyes to see the dragon holding onto the tree and dropping it safely next to them. While she wanted to see his biggest form, with this current form of his coupled with her small snake size he might as well be his enormous form. The snake didn't move a muscle, she simply stared at him with beady yellow eyes and a partially open mouth. He spoke to her in a rough, booming voice. For a few seconds she didn't do or say anything. Finally her size grew and she was standing right in front of him with only her thick, rough scales to cover her decency. Of course the fact that her clothing was lying on the ground behind her didn't bother her. All she could think of was this breathtaking creature standing before her.

She was speechless, but slowly she took step by step forward and held her hand out to touch the bridge of his snout. A croak escaped her mouth but she didn't have words for this.

Iskar did notice that as he turned to face her that Madena was frozen in place. He was sure that one of the emotions causing her to freeze in place was fear. Which would only be natural if it was one of the emotions. It is not every day that a person will have a dragon in front of them. But before she could react in any other way a tree, that he caught, started to come down. This gave the Magi a chance to see her change her form to a much smaller snake to avoid the tree. With the tree no longer a threat, the young woman was free to observe the dragon that is standing before her.

It is not one of his biggest forms, but compared to her he is massive. His eyes remained fixated on her as she stared up at him. Remaining silent until he spoke the few words that Madena seemed to not be able to answer. Iskar did notice her clothing being left where they were laying on the forest floor as the serpent grew in size, with only her scales to cover herself. Well at least she had that.

The two will not have to worry about anyone sneaking up on the two of them. With Iskar in his full dragon form complete with his heightened senses. Iskar will be able to pick up on anyone approaching the two of them. Even with his gaze fixed on Madena as she placed a hand on the rough scales of his snout. Well this is going better than he had expected. The Magi thought that the serpent woman would have ran off by now out of fear like how many have done in the past. Time will tell if that will happen though. Of course he was being careful with his actions to prevent from her becoming startled. Of course the one thing he did do was to lay down so that he was not using up so much energy standing there. Funny how simply laying down will let him stay in the dragon form for a longer duration than if he was standing. His clawed feet neatly laid over each other as he allowed Madena more time to let what she is seeing and feeling settle in.

He laid down onto the ground, the earth vibrating ever so slightly as he did it, allowing for her to reach him much easier. She carefully laid her hand on his snout, taking in the differences in texture. Her own scales were smooth and even, his was rough and course. Her wide eyes moved from his snout up into his glowing yellow eyes. She felt small, vulnerable against him. Sure she could still turn him into a very nice statue but how quick would that be compared to his flames or jaws shredding her to pieces.

After a few seconds, that felt like an eternity for her, a disbelieved smile formed on her face. She gave a small laugh, finally registering what she was seeing. "Amazing." she muttered. It was such an underwhelming response and it didn't cover at all what she was feeling, but it was the only word she could think of. She finally removed her hand from his snout and took a few steps to the left, taking in exactly just how big he is. "This is amazing!" she finally called out to him, regaining her voice. She knew that her most impressive form was big, but even then she doubted that she'd be as big as him.

"I can't think of any better word to describe this. You're amazing!" she called out happily. It didn't occur to her that shouting wasn't necessary given his more sensitive ears. "I'm actually curious how much bigger you are." she said as she looked him in the eyes. This was a dream come true for her. Being able to see one of these mythical creatures up close, to feel their scales and taste their scent, it was astonishing. Not that she would tell anyone, but even if she did no one would believe her.
