Kharia had lived for a little while now, and her early childhood was pretty much non-stop work. When you lived in a poor home, you tended to either wallow in self-pity or push yourself until you claw your way out of the financial hole you were born into. Now that she had some semblance of financial stability given her adventuring and tailoring pursuits, Kharia felt that she could just kick back and enjoy the twilight years of her life...ok, not exactly her twilight years, but some would say that 40 years in this world was passed your prime so yeah. The Sunken Lute Tavern had been standing for around 40 years and it had its little niché that kept people coming back to it, not an easy thing when people had so many options. Its strategy was pretty simple: it's a naval town with strong people, so appeal to that, they love proving their strength and hate looking weak so they'll come back for more.

As Kharia slammed her opponent's fist onto the table, jumping up and cheering along with the roaring crowds watching the 15th Annual Arm Wrestling Tournament be won, that fact made her feel all the smugger. Here were all these big strong guys that loved playing into the handsome sailor stereotype you saw in stories and here she was taking that image and smashing it to pieces. She was a small thing, thin, maybe even frail depending on your standards, and she was handing people's asses to them without much effort. Not that she was malicious about it, she liked to emphasize that she just did this for fun and bought the sailors a consolation pint afterward. The side effects of that mercy would often mean that like right now, she got sloshed and started doing something a bit more...shall we say flamboyant?

That thing today is jumping up on a table where some men were playing dominoes and starting to do a jig as the patrons cheered and started clapping out a beat...

Alcohol is magical.

Noria. She finally made it. After traveling for weeks and meeting a few people along the way she finally arrived at Noria...

And what a disaster it shaped out to be.

Madena's yellow reptilian eyes were as big as saucers. She figured that the imperial records she had could have been inaccurate after such a long time, but not for a second did she expect a booming province and cities crawling with hundreds of people. Never in her life had she set foot in anything bigger than a tiny farming village...now she was standing in a city center, dodging carriages and having people cussing at her. She was completely overwhelmed.

She was dressed in a simple patched up skirt passing her knees and her shirt wasn't in a better state at all. Her dark green cloak was covering her body, the imperial gladius and quiver on her hip, and her head. Thankfully her hair was behaving and remaining relatively still which kept a lot of attention off her, though she wished that she was wearing shoes. Not because of the mud or other things, but because in the crowd her feet was getting trampled.

Her small build didn't help either. She was drowning in the scores of people and she had no idea where she was going.

She kept moving blindly forward, holding onto the longbow that was slung over her body. To a normal person she might look like a huntress, but if anyone saw her face or features that mindset might change very quickly.

Her breathing was shallow and quick. She felt like she couldn't breathe any deeper. She was hyperventilating like there was no tomorrow.

Finally she emerged from the crowd...

...and found herself in front of a tavern by the looks of it. "The Sunken Lute" the sign said. For some reason the thought that it would be less cramped in there than outside in the busy streets. She pressed forth and entered the tavern, the first thing she saw was a woman hopping onto a table as the patrons cheered her on. Her eyes were wide, shocked at the immense display of drunken barbarism before her. A few more patrons entered from behind her and she was involuntarily pressed into the crowd, her hood falling from her head and her appearance shown to all with several hisses erupting from the snakes on her head.

Fun fact, until she left her home and went to the Magi Academy, Kharia never partook in narcotics because she didn't want to see strange things caused by hallucinations...this attitude was dropped very quickly after enrolling.

Nowadays, when she saw things out of sorts, she would tend to just take it in and formulate a response, Mages needed to be quick on their feet if they wanted to live long enough to grow ripe. So when she looked up during her jig and saw a woman with what looked like snakes for hair, and a crowd surrounding her, her mind was quick to instinctively start thinking of something. She looked lost and disoriented, which meant she likely needed help, and she was very monstrous-looking in the eyes of a general populace if her estimation of societal conventions was accurate. So she had to get her out of sight within the span of a second before the crowd in front of her noticed her, and hopefully she would be able to get a conversation going when that was done...well, hopefully, there would be a conversation regardless, she liked people who stood out.

In the brief moment she had before heads turned, Kharia turned right around and did the only thing she could do...she vomited. Expunging the alcohol via normal means wasn't pretty, but it was effective in this case. Her head dropped down, convulsions gripping her stomach and squeezing as brown and yellow bile erupted from her, the patrons all drawn to her (well, hopefully, all of them). As she spewed, she put a hand behind her back so that Madena could see it and pointed hastily to the right. On Madena's right were the stairs that led to the bedrooms you could stay in for a night. With any luck, she could get in one of them or up and out of immediate sight before people spotted her and panicked.

It was a good plan...right?

She stumbled and shoved around, somehow not gaining the attention of anyone but it still didn't help her situation. She was about to do something drastic when someone started throwing up. She spun around, seeing the woman on the table vomiting all over as well as...pointing somewhere. Madena followed the direction to a stairway. She didn't know who the woman was but she wasn't about to ask questions.

Madena squeezed through the crowd until she finally reached the stairway. She turned around to look back at the girl but slammed her back into something. She spun around with frightened eyes and looked up at a massive man looking like he's about to scream. Before he got a sound out, Madena's eyes glowed brightly. The man froze in place and turned to stone, clothes and all. She bolted past the man, up the stairs and into the nearest open room and shut the door.

She leaned against the door and looked around. It was empty, probably an open room for rent...hopefully. Her breathing finally started to slow down and she slowly slid down to sit on the floor. Tears of fear were threatening but she shoved them aside. She won't cry over something as pathetic as this. Instead she focused on her surroundings. The commotion outside was muffled quite well along with the sounds of the city. In the room it was quiet and peaceful. Finally she was safe again...

Several things happened in rapid succession. First, Kharia saw the patrons evacuate the immediate fallout zone faster than a crab in a fish market, her bile splashing on to the floor. Then she heard the anguished yells of someone, probably the bartender, and the sound of heavy footfall. Then someone kindly pressed a rag into her hand as she dropped from the table, disappearing in the crowd as the owner quickly focused on the vomit, wanting to clean it up fast before the place smelled of lightning mage. She turned the corner and headed up the stairs only to have her head collide with something hard as she moved up. She stumbled back, almost slipping on the thin steps, and looked up, her gaze widening at the...well, not really corpse. One of the patrons was encased in stone, or he was stone, either possibility wasn't good.

For a brief moment, Kharia got the sinking feeling that she shouldn't have helped that woman, whoever she was, considering the end result. Still, perhaps she was just scared or taken by surprise? Maybe she didn't know how to use her powers? Maybe she was just attacked! She knew full well that she was using the lines of justification that one would attribute to a Mage when, in fact, she had absolutely no idea what kind of species or person this...'slither lady' was. She had just acted in a single moment of instinct, wanting to protect someone - had that caused a life to be taken in turn? A crashing from behind her knocked her out of that particular train of thought, sooner or later people would come up the stairs, she needed to get his body out of here so (hopefully) this could be reversed.

She grabbed the statue by the leg and the torso, heaving it with all the might of a prized bull and lifting it up and into her arms. The question of how exactly she was lifting what had to be a mound of stone twice the weight of a human was something that had to be answered later, Kharia beelining for the first door that she saw, nudging it open and leveraging it open with her shoulder before shuffling in, nudging it closed behind her. Taking notice of the snake lady in the corner of her eye, Kharia set the statue upright before turning to her and pointing to the man.
"Please tell me you can undo this..." She huffed, letting out an exasperated sigh. "Assuming, forgive me, that this was unintentional."

Suddenly the door shoved against her and Madena quickly moved out of the way, getting on her feet and getting ready to fight. As the door opened and the woman from down below entered with the petrified man, Madena's face morphed and along with the snakes on her head she let out a snarling hiss. Thankfully her eyes didn't start to glow otherwise Kharia would have been in trouble. When Madena noticed that it was the woman who helped her, her face changed back and she took a step back.

She placed the statue on the floor and asked if the Serpent could undo the spell. "No. He's dead. He would have given my presence away, I didn't have another way to shut him up...how the hell did you even manage to pick him up?" she explained and asked, slightly cocking her head to the side. She looked the woman over. She didn't look like she was a danger, and she did help Madena escape the mess down below. Maybe it's worth giving her this chance. "Look...thank you for helping me. I didn't expect Noria to be such a bustling place at all." she said shyly but sincerely. "I was under the impression that it was still a town only starting to grow."

Kharia only caught a glimpse of the beast beneath the bangs, but it made her freeze for a brief moment as she looked the Snakedy right in the eyes. It was rare that she felt outmatched, but considering the man beside her and how quickly she was able to morph like that...well, she got the feeling that pissing this person off was a bad idea. Of course, she then proceeded to place her hands to her temples and breathe in deeply, taking a moment to steady herself.
"Ok...so I'm not sure if you know this," She began slowly, "but killing people is generally frowned upon in polite society, as in, you will be attacked if you kill someone without very good reason. This is not a good reason." She gestured to the statue again, covering the mouth and knocking against the base of the skull. {color=#0cf5de]"If someone sees you again and they're going to get loud, just clamp a hand over their mouth and hit them in the base of the skull, it should knock them out cleanly because you cannot, and I repeat, cannot kill as a first resort in a town."[/color]

She talked about not actually knowing Noria was this big, and she seemed sincere in her gratitude for the help, so that gave her some hope that she could be reasoned with. She nodded toward her, moving over to the bed and sitting down on it. "It was nothing, people tend to freak out when they see something that they don't understand, snake ladies, being one of those. They've seen Magi with altered appearances before, but you are on an entirely new level, I just didn't want you to get swarmed by pitchforks." Kharia had never liked the idea of people being treated differently, there was the odd person she had seen altered because of an accident or Magical bloodline that was ridiculed or attacked for being different, and she knew the Nobles had appearances on the brain 24/7, so it was something of a sore spot. This woman had to have been away for a long time to think that Noria was anything small, maybe hiding or in hibernation. "Can I see your map please? Oh, I'm Kharia by the way."

Madena was not in a good place at all. She was lost, confused, bewildered...the last thing she needed now was an explanation of something quite logical. "I know killing's sort of frowned upon in anything bigger than a barbarian village...listen this is the first time in my life that I've been in a city, but I know how to behave. That guy caught me at a very bad time, and for that I'm sorry." she explained, trying to stay calm, but it was clear that she was rather overwhelmed right now.

The woman sat down on the bed and motioned for Madena to join her. The girl reluctantly took a seat and crossed her legs on the bed, resting her back against the wall next to the bed. "You don't have to explain to me the dangers of looking like this." she said softly, taking a deep breath. "For the past ten years I've been dealing with soldiers, adventurers and mercenaries all storming into my house and wanting my head. This time...I'm just a fish out of water." she explained to the woman. She hated the fact that everyone wanted her dead just because she was different and were it not for Allison, Madena would have never left her fort.

The woman introduced herself and asked for Madena's map. the girl gave an embarrassed chuckle as she handed over her map. "The name's Madena...and sure. But I know where I went wrong. The map's a couple centuries outdated." she explained, her cheeks turning a slight pink hue, She was blushing from her stupid mistake. Any person would have figured that the map is outdated, but that was all she had.

Kharia looked up at Madena with a sad gaze. On the one hand, this person had killed someone without even trying, just because she was startled. It justified why people would try to kill her, she was dangerous and she could kill so many people if she were so inclined. On the other hand, she was so much like a kid stranded in a weird land without her parents, so scared by everything and trying to function despite being so close to just shutting down from stress. If she were ruthless enough, she probably would have just thrust a sword into her gullet and rid the world of a potential threat...but she wasn't that kind of person. She was lost and scared and she just wanted some help to stay afloat, and Kharia wanted to help her...and maybe make a friend too.
"Hm...I get it, you were just scared, acted out of habit, made a mistake." She murmured softly, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Sorry, just recovering from the drink, I'm a little whoozy, normally a bit more coherent than this."

She nodded at the mention of being a fish out of water, chuckling softly to herself. "More like a Snake out of Fort," She said with a smirk. If she was going to navigate this world with a little more foresight, she was going to need a little help in the landscape area. Kharia reached into her satchel and pulled out the Naur Ar' Anna, opening it up and flipping through the pages. After a moment, she came to her personal map, handing it off to the Snake Lady without a second thought. "This should help you avoid this kind of situation in the future." Now that the immediate problem was taken care of, she could indulge a little in her curiosity. "If you don't mind me asking, where do you come from? I mean, I know you've spent a lot of time holed up in a fort, but were you always there?"

Kharia's comment was a bit of a strange one...and slightly offensive. "I wouldn't say 'habit', though..." she said somewhat cautiously. Sure she's killed a lot of people in her life, but in her eyes it was all out of self defence. Of course, given her track record, she could be described as a cold-hearted killer...but not for one second did she see herself as such. The idea of being seen as a ruthless killer was an appalling one to say the least.

Kharia apologized over her behaviour, blaming it on the alcohol. Madena gave a smile. "It's alright. I've never had alcohol before, so I guess you're fine." she said. She giggled softly at Kharia's comment. "Yeah, I guess that's a more accurate way of putting it.".

Madena was rather surprised when Kharia handed her her own map. She wanted to give it back until the page simple reappeared. She was quite taken back by the magic, intrigued to put it lightly. Her thoughts were interrupted when Kharia asked where she was from. Deciding to make good use of the map she pointed out where her home was located. "Here, in the western parts of the imperial territory. My home used to be an imperial garrison but it's been abandoned for centuries. My parents...the fled there because they didn't want to get rid of me. I've lived there all my life. This is the farthest I've ever been from home in my life." she explained, looking Kharia in the eye. "That's where I got the map. The archives are still in a good state so I spent a lot of time reading through it all. Back then Noria was only starting to develop, but was still pretty small...I guess things changes since then." she said with a sheepish smile.

Madena didn't see it so much as a habit - killing whenever she sees someone as a threat. That was good, it reinforced that she had no desire to kill anyone. Didn't change the fact that she could though and probably quite easily too. Kharia could feel that little voice in the back of her mind loud and clear - she was a threat to anyone that so much as looked at her in a threatening way, she had killed hundreds, if not thousands, killing her would preserve many other lives. Simultaneously, she forced herself to take a deep breath and think back to her Mother's teachings - there were no monsters, only people with thoughts, dreams, and minds of their own. Sure, she had killed plenty, but they attacked her, not the other way around. It was only natural that, when you could freeze people solid with you mind, it would become your de facto defense, especially given the amount of lethal force she would have to contend with. Ultimately, this woman, Madena, was just a lost soul finally exploring the world she had been afraid of for so long, killing her was unneeded and heartless.

Kharia could only give a look of pure disbelief when she mentioned having never partaken in the bounties of the bottle, immediately removing a small hip flask and putting it in Madena's hand.
"I have to insist that you at least give it a go, trust me, that's got some juniper berries mixed in so it should taste like juice." She said, nudging the hand gently back as it reflexively tried to give it back. She had a feeling that she would try that, and she wasn't about to force it on her, but she wanted Madena to, at least, consider it. "Alcohol can really loosen you up when you need it, it's made me feel a lot better when I've been feeling like I was too wound up, though I'd recommend you not drink too much because, you know, anything is bad for you in large doses."

Kharia made a point of immediately jotting down the location of Madena's fortress on her newly formed map as soon as it was pointed out to her. She had mentioned an intact archive - first-hand information from centuries ago - that she was pretty interested in looking over. It wasn't that she didn't trust the libraries and historians, it's just that history is oft written by the victor, and the truth can become lost to time. She hated the idea of cover-ups and fabrications when it came to history, people so readily willing to forget past mistakes are more likely to repeat those same mistakes in the future. "I take you you were born with the serpentine appearance then? Your parents didn't want to have to deal with the stigma of looking different from the norm?" She asked, her face sinking at the thought. Judging on appearance wasn't just rude and insensitive and prejudicial, it was liable to get you into trouble if you insulted the wrong person. Insulting Madena could be deadly after all. "I'm sorry you had to grow up in isolation for that, it's not right."

She handed her a flask which she took more out of reflex than anything else. He looked quizzically at the flask then at Kharia, unsure of what to make of it. She never had alcohol before in her life...and given what she saw downstairs she wasn't sure if she wanted to. Kharia reassured her that it would taste nice and the sound of juniper berries did make it more tempting.

She went on to explain that it could in fact be useful. With how tense she was now it sounded like an amazing idea. She gave Kharia a final look and brought the flask to her lips. She took a swig and shut her eyes tightly. She had no idea what she was drinking, but the sweet berry taste was certainly quite enjoyable...but the burn that went down her throat to her gut was something she never felt before. She coughed a little, whilst trying to laugh as well. "I-it's...good." she croaked, suddenly finding herself without a voice. She composed herself and helped herself to another hearty swig before handing the flask back to Kharia, not wanting to finish her drink. "I don't think I will drink too much, based on what I saw downstairs." he said with an amused grin, teasing Kharia.

She inquired about Madena's appearance. That was fine, but she didn't like it when people spoke about her parents without knowing them. Kharia apologised, more about where Madena had to grow up. "Yes. I guess I have the Myst to thank for it. And no, my parents didn't care about that. They were branded traitors for wanting to keep me alive." she answered, finishing with a bit more venom in her words than she intended. "In the end keeping me alive was also what killed them." she answered with her annoyed tone, feeling a pang in her chest the more she thought of it. Taking Kharia's word she took the flask back again and helped herself to a few more sips, hoping that the drink would help her calm down.

Unfortunately for her, 26 years of not even a drop of alcohol didn't exactly help her build up an immunity. By the time she finished the flask her fingers were already feeling...strange. "Do you...do you have any more of that?" she asked rather shyly. "I actually like it." she admitted with a slight pink hue in her cheeks.

For someone that had never tried alcohol before, the young snake seemed to take to it pretty well, gulping down a pretty large swathe of the purple liquid before handing it back to a bemused Kharia. Given the situation, it would be best to make sure she doesn't get knockout drunk - she didn't want all the trouble she had endured to be for nothing after all. Anyways, it was about time the two actually focused on what really damn mattered. Kharia cursed herself inwardly as the conversation rolled on - she had a tendency to get caught up in the conversation even when she was meant to be doing something important. As much as she wanted to learn more about her new friend, she still needed to make sure she got out of town without getting lynched.

"Well, I imagine they would want their daughter's friends to continue keeping her alive, so c'mon, let's go, we need to get you out of Noria before someone decides they want a snakeskin lute." She said, jumping to her feet and gently taking the flask back. "Probably best if we don't have any more of that, a lightweight drunk isn't very good at staying quiet." It only then began to occur to her how incredibly stupid it was getting her even a little tipsy - the first hit the worst after all.

Ah well, they were all drunk down there, maybe things would be fine...right?

Kharia wanted to get the girl out of town. Madena actually wanted to see some more of it despite the shock it proved to be on her system, but she knew the woman was right. She couldn't stay here. Sadly she also didn't want to give Madena any more of the drink, though her reasons were pretty sound. That still didn't stop the girl from moaning in protest like a teenager.

Finally she got up and looked around, trying to think on how to get out of here. An idea popped into her head with an enthusuastic "Oh!" and she started to take her weapon belt off. She tied that to her backpack and then proceeded to remove her clothing. Thankfully her modesty was protected by the thick scales covering her breasts and groin. Still, the spontaneous action might still be surprising to the woman watching her. "I can turn into a snake then simply hide in my backpack. That way no one will think twice if they see you." she explained, then shrunk down into a snake small enough to hide in her bag. Once that was all done ans she was practically invisible to the rest of the world, her tiny head stuck out from under the bag's flap to look at Kharia. "Well? Let'sss get going!" she hissed happily to the woman with happy beady eyes.

Kharia chuckled at Madena's protestations, images of her own pouting demeanor when she was denied or devoid of drink coming to mind as she rose from the bed and offered a hand for her to get up. Her hand went unattended though since Madena suddenly decided that stripping was a great thing to do right now. For a brief moment, Kharia just stood there, her mouth agape as the snake slithered out of her garments only to reveal more natural protection beneath the clothing. She was all for the casual sex, but this didn't seem like the time...

Madena was quick to slap her dirty mind in the face and get things back on track herself this time, explaining her shapeshifting abilities to an approving nod and satisfied murmur from the white-haired lady before her. Being small and slithery would definitely make things a lot easier for once, good to know. As a side benefit, which she noticed as the lady regressed into her smaller-sized form, it also made her unbearably cute, the sight of her making Kharia's face practically melt into unintelligible gibberish and squeeing as she practically seized the snake and picked her up, looking her up and down.
"You. Are. So. CUUUUUTE!!!" She squeed excitably, nuzzling her forehead up and down the snake's back as she fingers caressed the scales. "I am going to love you and hug you and kiss you and call you Scaley Madena!"
