An Archipelago native, Nilsa was born to a merchant family. Competent fishermen and traders, her family island-hopped to sell their wares. From a young age, she showed promise when it came to bartering. As a teen, she began to set her sights beyond her island home.
Her sea-fairing career began when she stowed away aboard a merchant vessel destined for the Old Empire. Of course, she was discovered fairly quickly and put to work in order to make good. Instead of being sent back to shore, she was allowed to remain as part of the crew – their new cabin girl. Her life was not glamorous, her duties often included cooking and cleaning. But those rare occasions above decks made a great impression on the young woman.
Over the next few years, she worked for a couple different crews before something really stuck. Aboard the Darya, she earned her place as a regular crew member and soon worked her way to first mate. Many members of the crew were skeptical of her skills and abilities, but she proved that she was just as hardy as the lot of them.
Nilsa traveled the world with the Darya.
But after a time, their elderly captain grew ill. During this time, the ship was at port fairly often in order to tend to the man's health. When he died, his command of the ship – and the ship itself – was passed along to Nilsa. Many of the older crew members signed off after she took command, but she retained a number of able bodied sailors to keep the ship sailing. And, over time, she grew quite a loyal following.
Nilsa is terribly superstitious and holds to a number of odd sea-fairing traditions. She's rough around the edges and can be a bit crass (she spends her time with a crew of sailors, after all). She's a shrewd business woman with quite a tough front, but she has a secret sensitive side. Nilsa is honest to the point of being blunt. However, she is generally fairly pleasant company, especially when there's drink involved.
