Kriege/Eagle's Landing

There was no greater relief for him other than simply standing in his city's main road again. While he wasn't lost or gone for all too long, the journey was just strange for him. Not to mention the nightmare of facing those lunatics in Nal Sur and having to ask a werewolf chief to get him back home. But here he was. A few new scars and wounds, the most prominent being the faded bite marks on the back of his neck, the tiny scratches on his face, as well as the stitched up holes in his shoulder, calf and side. But he was alive and he was home.

And he knew she would probably struggle to believe it.

The news of the attack had gotten around in the last few weeks. She would have heard about it, and given her tendency to freak out she would have immediately assumed the worst. He was glad to prove her wrong in this instance. He stood in the road with a backpack slung over a shoulder. His sword and bolter was tied to it. The grandmaster won't be impressed by the fact that he destroyed his armour but it was fine. He would understand.

He finally found the will to walk forward. For some reason he was nervous. What would she say? How would she react? Was she even home? A ton of questions and worries swirled in the back of his head. He slowly made his way towards his home. Their home. He lost his key when he had to abandon his gear in Nal Sur. Which meant his second suit was also lost. Hopefully the Watchers will help pay for all that armour...

Finally in front of his door, his right hand lifted to knock while his left held onto the strap of his bag. But there was some hesitation in his action. He finally took a breath then knocked firmly on the door. He hoped she was home...

Weeks, it had been weeks since she had heard of what had taken place in Nal Sur. Weeks since she had received a letter. Weeks since she had known without any shadow of a doubt that he was alive. Despite her fondness of Kriege and Eagle's Landing, there was not nearly enough to do here to keep her occupied. Not enough to draw her thoughts away from her fears. Not that she could complain, it felt wrong to wish for more people to be sick or in need of help. Even the small library she had amassed in small towers in the bedroom wasn't enough of a distraction from the fact that he was gone and there was a good chance he wasn't coming back.

If she had known it was the last time she would see him, Nea would have done things differently. She wouldn't have let him go so easily. She would have made him linger just a little longer, stolen just a few extra moments. A small part of her may have tried to stop him, but she knew he wouldn't have listened. He would have gone anyway. Whatever had happened was inevitable.

Though she had little to do, Nea tried to keep herself out of the house. Being stuck there alone was too much of a reminder of the fact that he wasn't beside her. She was tired of crying, tired of missing him, tired of being cold. If nothing else, she was thankful that winter would be over soon. She wasn't exactly sure what that meant in Kriege, but she supposed she would soon find out. Despite everything, the thought to return to Rhisoka had not once occurred. Why would it? Even left all alone the thought of returning back to that city and to her parents was unpalatable. These thoughts stuck with Nea as she wandered a bit aimlessly. She had gone in search of some groceries but had returned with nothing. Her appetite just wasn't what it used to be these days. Besides, the shopping was only meant to serve as a distraction, it wasn't like she hadn't just purchased food the day before - and the day before that. She was running out of things to do.

Nea made her way back to the house resigned, only half paying attention to the world around her. Eagle's Landing had grown used to her, but that did not mean that she had made many friends, or any at all really. That was her own fault she supposed. She was a physician and they saw her professionally first and foremost, no one seemed all too interested in a social call. And that was fine. She wasn't quite sure she was good company at the moment anyhow, or that she would be any time soon.

Finally she tore her focus off the ground as she approached the house, stopping dead in the street at the sight. A man at her door. If she hadn't known better she would have sworn it was Bernardt, but surely it couldn't be. That was probably the remnants of hope still wishing for his return. It couldn't be. She refused to believe it. She had had enough of crying and she wasn't sure her heart could take the let down that would follow when the man turned to reveal someone else. It must just be someone in need of her assistance. It wouldn't be the first time someone just showed up at her door - and then her eyes shifted from his shape and the back of his head to his pack as he adjusted it on his shoulder. The bolter, the sword. Nea would recognize those anywhere.

She was left with two conclusions. Either this was Bernardt, a thought which she wasn't entirely ready to entertain, or this was a man come to tell her his fate. Perhaps she should just turn and come back the way she came. Give herself some time to think about this all. As much as she hated the not knowing, if the man really had come to return his things, would it be so wrong to put off hearing what exactly had happened? In a strange way it felt like it would extend his life just a bit. Perhaps she was being crazy. She felt somewhat crazy.

Then he turned and she caught sight of his profile. Nea was sure her heart stopped beating as her breath caught in her chest. It was him. There was a part of her that still did not want to believe it, just in case it proved to be some cruel trick, but there was no denying it now. He's alive. She rushed to him then, with every intention of wrapping her arms around him and never letting go. The distance, however, had allowed time for her elation and relief to be overpowered by her anger. By the time she reached him all she could do was shove at his back.

"Where have you been?" More tears in her eyes, by the Myst she hated crying, "It's been weeks! Weeks! You couldn't have sent one letter?"

Nea shoved at him again.

Bernardt looked around a bit before knocking again. His heart was slowly sinking as his nerves were taking over. He let out a sigh as he stood in front of the door. He didn't even notice Nea standing like a statue a couple meters behind him.

He decided that she might be someplace else. Maybe the infirmary or the inn? She was working as a physician after all.

Then he felt the eyes on him. The wind shifted and her scent passed him, filling his nose. He wanted to turn to face her as he heard the footfalls getting closer, but before he got a chance to even turn he was shoved against the door with a thud and a grunt. Instinctively he reached for his sword on his back as he faced whoever shoved him, then he relaxed as he looked into Nea's beautiful, furious emerald gaze. He was speechless, staring down at her with wide eyes not sure of what to say. This was not at all the greeting he expected.

She shoved him again but this time he had his footing and didn't budge. "I was stuck in the wilderness and open sea for weeks! If I could I would have!" he fired right back at her with a frown of his own. "And I got shot more than enough over there, I don't need you trying to kill me as well!" he scolded, resting his hands on his hips.

He stared at her for a good few seconds, huffing with annoyance at her...then it all washed away as he wrapped his arms around her and hugged her as tight as he could, spinning around with her as he laughed and held her tightly. He finally put her down again and gave her a passionate kiss on the lips, then hugged her a bit more again. He didn't have words to say how much he missed her.

Bernardt was none too pleased to be greeted in such a way. His expression a mix of confusion and his own sort of annoyance. He shot his explanations back at her, but she hardly heard them. They would register later when she wasn't quite so angry, when she wasn't trying quite so desperately not to cry. His hands rested on his hips as he looked down at her and she noted the scratches on his cheek. Nea tried not to think too hard about them.

She had every intention of chastising him a bit more when he seemed to soften. Suddenly she was enveloped in his arms, the sensation warm and familiar. Nea melted into him before giving a small surprised noise as he lifted her to spin with a relieved, happy laugh.
He held her tightly, as though he never intended to let her go and she softened a bit herself, even if there was a part of her still quite furious with him.

A kiss was placed on her lips and she melted just a bit more, relaxing into his embrace as he held her. She held him back in the silence, too overwhelmed to do anything else. The tears that had clung to the corners of her eyes finally fell as she closed them, burying herself in his shirt.

Finally her defeated, sorrowful confession came, "I thought you were dead."

Finally the tears started to roll and she buried her face in his chest. A hand came to caress the back of her head while he pressed a cheek against her as well. He wanted to hold her tighter, squeeze her as hard as he could but he forced himself not to. The last thing they needed now was for him to hurt her. She finally confessed the source of her trouble.

He gave her a kiss on the top of her head and rested his cheek on her again, closing his eyes. "Almost. But not yet. I'm still here." he muttered to her. He gave another kiss and squeezed her a little harder. Finally after what was probably minutes of standing in front of the door he finally released her a bit and looked down at her. "May I come in?" he asked her with a chuckle, just to get a tease in. It's been far too long since the last time he could joke with her.

Inside the house he dropped his backpack next to a chair and drew a deep breath. He missed his home. He looked to her again with a warm smile. "You have no idea how much I missed you." he said then pulled her into another tight hug and planted a kiss on her lips again. He pressed his forehead against hers, savouring this moment.

Although the hold he had on her was tight, she couldn't complain. If anything it only reemphasized the fact that he was actually there, that this wasn't some sort of waking dream or hallucination. His lips placed a kiss on the crown of her head, his cheek came to rest against it in turn. Bernardt reassured her he wasn't quite dead yet before settling back into the silence. There was so much to say but neither seemed to want to say it. At least, for now, they seemed to have a bit of time left. Whatever needed to be said could be said later. For now all that mattered was that he was alive, he was alive and he was home.

When he finally pulled back from her, opened his eyes to regard her she lifted a hand, shakily wiping away whatever tears that remained. Well, this was certainly not how she had expected today to go. Nea stared back at him until he made his little joke, drawing forth a small laugh. She drew back away from him, hand into her pocket to retrieve the key. Door unlocked she made her way inside, holding the door open for him.

It was strange to see him back in this place. She had imagined it many times, but somehow this was different. Had things changed between them? They had spent so much time apart. Though, she did suppose two months or so wasn't quite so much time in the grand scheme of things, but still, it was a decent chunk of time. And so much of it spent without any sort of communication. She suddenly felt awkward and out of place, not quite as comfortable or as sure as she had once been in his company. Would he still find her as precious and intriguing as he had before he left? Were things now different?

Bernardt offered her a warm smile and his eyes seemed to match the expression as he looked to her. He reached for her, drew her close. Lips found each other again and when they parted she allowed relief to wash over her as he rested his forehead against hers.

"I believe I have at least an inkling - if you have felt anything as I have these past few months."

Nea pulled back away, far enough that she could observe him, look over his face. She noted the scratches again, "You're hurt," Fingertips rose to graze them, "What happened...?"

She wasn't entirely sure she wanted to know.

"I think it may have been mutual" he said softly with a chuckle. She then pulled back and raised a hand to look him over. His brown eyes observed her puffy emerald eyes as she looked at his new scars. She asked what happened and he shrugged. "Nothing too serious. Got shot a few times then I got into a fight with another werewolf. Got a few bite marks and scratches but nothing serious. He looked a lot worse when I was done with him." he finished triumphantly, giving a brief explanation.

"Don't worry. I don't think it was deep enough to leave scars. I don't need more of those." he joked, trying to lift her spirits. He kissed her again then picked her up, cradling her in his arms as he sat down on one of the nearby chairs with a sigh. He seated her sideways in his lap and held her against him with his arms around her hip. He kissed her again, unable to get enough of her.

His hold of her didn't let up. he pressed his head against her chest. "I've missed you so much, Nea." he whispered to her. "Your voice, your eyes, your warmth against me, your laugh, everything." he said warmly.

Nea's first instinct was to fix what was wrong, but something in his demeanor told her to leave it alone. Perhaps she would ask later, would ask again for more details. After all, he had been there at Nal Sur, knew exactly what had taken place. Everything she had come to know was little more than hear-say. He explained that the werewolf he had quarreled with had left in far worse shape than he, puffing out his chest a bit as he did so. And even if he glazed over the fact that he had admitted to the fact he had been shot several times, Nea did not miss the detail.

Bernardt instructed her not to worry, ending with a joke. She smiled weakly at his attempt at humor, meeting his gaze before he leaned in to kiss her again. As she let herself finally believe it, he lifted her from the ground, scooped her up into his arms and carried her to sit at a chair. He held her protectively, and she began to fully realize just how much she had missed him. Nea shoved the thoughts away that his return might only be temporary. That someday, who knew when, he would have to leave again and it would begin this whole mess over again. He kissed her and made forgetting slightly easier.

His head lowered to rest against her chest, arms draping about his shoulders, fingers sinking gently into his hair at the nape of his neck. Bernardt whispered to her, listing the things he had missed about her, summing it all up to everything. She smiled gently, lost for words. Echoing his just didn't seem to do the despair she had felt the past few weeks justice. But what use was there in telling him what she had felt? Nea stayed silent, tightened her grip on him, pressed a kiss into his hair.

"I am glad you are safe, and I am glad you are home." Another kiss on the top of his head as he kept it lowered, "I missed you too - perhaps a bit too much."

She held onto him, stroked his hair, kissed his head. It felt so good to have her close again. But despite her affection, despite her love, he could tell something was wrong. She was tense, hesitant almost. He didn't notice it with all the excitement but now it was clear as day. He gave a kiss on the shoulder then looked up to her. A hand came up and brush some hair out of the way. "Nea...talk to me." he said softly.

He kept looking up at her with soft brown eyes, begging her to tell him what's wrong. "Come on. Something's gnawing at you, I can see it. What's wrong?" he muttered to her.

This wasn't the reunion he was expecting. Had something happened between them in the time they were apart? He still loved her very much, and while he couldn't make it as clear as he wanted to how much, he still missed her dearly. But it bothered him that she was so hesitant now...

Bernardt pressed an affectionate kiss at her shoulder before turning his attention upwards toward her. His hand rose to gently move aside some of her hair that had fallen into her face, brushing it back behind her ear as he quietly implored her to talk to him. It was almost as though he could read her thoughts, and she almost laughed at how well he still knew her. Slowly, gently, he encouraged her again to tell him what was bothering her. He was concerned, and perhaps he should be. Nea watched him a moment or two, green eyes searching brown before she quietly asked, "Have you ever been the one left behind?"

She let the question hang between them in the silence, though she supposed she already knew the answer. Who would he have had to leave him? She was the first woman to capture his heart, and she sincerely hoped she would be the only. From what she knew of his parents they did not go gallivanting about and he had no siblings. He didn't know or understand. And how could she even begin to explain?

"You've been gone... do you know how long?" Her voice remained gentle and even, despite the fact that she felt as though she might just cry again, "Did you count the days? I have. Sixty four. Thirty seven of which have passed since your last letter, since I heard about what happened in Nal Sur."

Nea could hardly mention it without choking up, so she paused to collect herself. "Almost forty days with no word, no idea what had happened to you. Forty days here alone. I didn't have adventuring to occupy me as you have, or any great task to do. Sure, there have been distractions, a few babies to be born, a broken bone or two, a house full of coughs - but much, much more time to feel your absence. And what was I to think? From what was said about... what happened. All of the dead...?"

She paused to look him over, noting the scratches again - thank everything she hadn't quite noticed the bite yet. "Seeing you now is a bit like seeing a ghost. I'm still trying to believe you're really here."

Nea placed a hand on his chest and shifted her focus down to it, "I don't know which felt worse, desperately hoping you were still alive or trying to convince myself that odds were better you weren't."

She left it there, bringing her focus back up to meet his warm brown eyes. How could she tell him she was terrified of going through all of that again? Knew that they probably would? It wasn't fair. He was what he was, a Watcher, of which she knew he was quite proud. It would not be fair to burden him with her fears.

Bernardt looked up at Nea, waiting for her. She watched him for a second before talking. She asked him a question that he didn't understand at first, but as she let the question linger it sank in.

It was a new concept to him, having to leave her behind every time he went to work out there to keep the lands safe or to take on a contract somewhere else in the world. It actually made him feel guilty. She then asked if he knew how long he was gone. He slowly shook his head, not wanting to interrupt. He knew he was gone for more than a month, around 2 months, but he didn't have exact numbers. He was a bit shocked when she said the number.

She paused, trying to calm down. He gently stroked her back, but he didn't say anything. He let her go on uninterrupted as she poured her heart out. She mentioned her fears of what she had heard, having no idea that it also troubled him. She observed him for a second. He knew she was looking at the scratches that ran along his brow and the side of his head among other areas. They were small and would heal up, but they were there nonetheless. He didn't want to know her reaction over the slight bite mark on the back of his neck or the three holes along his shoulder, side and neck.

Her hand found his chest where it lingered. She could feel his steady heartbeat against her palm. A hand shifted over hers and gave a gentle squeeze.

Her eyes found his again. His was filled with guilt and sincerity, hers was filled with fear and sorrow. He didn't know what to say. His mouth opened but no sound came out. "...Nea..." he stammered but fell quiet again. "I know no excuse or explanation will make you feel better. I can tell you that my goal to get out of there was simply to have this moment again. To be with you. But that doesn't take the fact away that you were still alone." he started softly and hesitantly.

"But I don't know what else to say. I'm a Watcher, Nea. It's my duty. Out there, I was one of the only people able to fight back. I was one of the only people able to stand against the attackers to try and give innocent magi a chance to escape. It is my duty to stand up for the innocent no matter where I go. I understand it's unfair to you, to leave you like that and to go fight for other people. Of course I can leave the order and become a city guard, or a farmer, or something else as mundane as that...but that's not who I am." he explained to her.

He understood what she wanted. She wanted him to stay here with her, to be safe. But that wasn't him. "I know you want me to stay here with you. But I can't. Believe me, you can't understand how much I'm torn in half between you and other people. I want to stay here, truly, but I can't leave the weak and innocent behind like that. I couldn't live with myself. But I also can't live with myself if I left you with heartache like this." his hand left hers and cupped her neck, brushing her cheek with his thumb gently.

"I knew the risk when I joined the order. I knew any day out there can be my last. Until I met you that was never a problem. I know my parents will miss me but besides them I had no one else. No siblings or strong friendships. Only them. Now I have you...and suddenly I'm torn between you and the order. Believe me, I've thought about leaving them to be here with you. But I have nowhere else to go. Nowhere else where I could be at peace." he said. The way he said it sounded so very wrong, as if it was her fault. But this wasn't his strong suit. It wasn't his intention to sound like it.

His grip around her tightened. He didn't want her to leave. "I can't guarantee that I'll always be coming back. That's the risk I take every time I step out of that door. I guess..." he trailed off. His brown eyes peered into her soul. "I guess all I can do, is to make every second with you count and enjoy it as much as I can."

Nea hated the guilt that she found in his expression, in his eyes as he stared back at her. Bernardt tried to offer her something, but his words failed him. Refused to come. Finally, he stammered out her name, a sort of request for forgiveness. It was the only thing she could liken it to.

Finally, he began. It was a long speech, full of repetition. Offering explanations, excuses - though nothing he said was unknown to her. She understood it all. She knew who he was, she didn't need him to spell it out for her. In the end, she didn't dare interrupt, knowing full well that his words were only half meant for her - half for her and half for him as an aid to reconcile what he was now feeling. They were both stuck. She knew that. His position was no more comfortable than hers, it would be unfair to even think otherwise.

His fingers brushed her neck, her cheek. He explained how torn he felt, between duty and her. Let her into his thoughts, about the decisions he had made and the choices he had considered. His grip tightened and he held her closer. Bernardt's eyes cut through her in the way she supposed hers always had. All of those explanations of how intrusive she could be - though she didn't see him as intrusive at all. There was comfort in his gaze, and she had desperately missed it. He looked at her and he saw everything. He could read her and her thoughts and her heart as plainly as though they were words written upon a page.

The speech came to an end and she simply watched him, eyes dancing between his as she searched his face trying to find the words to explain what she wanted to. To reassure him that even though she was terrified there was no place else that she would rather be. That and that if he were to change then he simply wouldn't be him anymore, and she could never accept that. She would never forgive herself if she forced him into something he would regret.

"Bernardt." Nea's head tilted gently to the side as she regarded him. Oh how much she had missed him.

"I would never - never - ask you to leave the Watchers. Ever. Or stop doing what you do - protecting the innocent, preserving peace. Why would I ask you to stop being the very things that I fell in love with?"

Nea brought a hand to his cheek, offered a weak smile. "Still, that doesn't mean that I'm not terrified of losing you."

Her eyes glanced at the scratches only partially obscured by her hand, "You have to be patient with me, and help me through. I've spent the past few weeks mourning you because I didn't know what else to do. I just," she let her hand fall to his arm, gently pressing fingertips into the muscle beneath the fabric, "I need help believing you're real again. That you're here."

She sighed, not sure how to explain what she wanted. How could she when she didn't really understand herself? She felt overwhelmed, and she was. Tears welled in her eyes again and she shook her head.

"I was not ready for you to go. Though I don't know how I could have ever been - though being convinced I had lost you...."

Nea wasn't making sense anymore, there was no coherent train of thought. She turned her attention back to him, met his gaze and held it pleading in a way.

"I need you to make me believe it again. Because all I can think is that at any moment I am going to wake and then... And then...."

His name escaped her lips ever so softly. She reassured him that she would never expect him to change, neither would she ever ask him. That was good news at least. She continued to ask him to be patient, that this was not what she was used to. He understood that it must have been a shock for her.

He listened to her, not interrupting her. He saw the tears starting to form in her eyes. Her hand gently squeezed his arm as she tried to reassure herself that he was real. It didn't take long for her to start rambling, though. But he didn't laugh of comment. He let her get it out, get it off her chest. She finally finished, but was unable to finish the sentence. This was his chance.

He pulled her closer and pressed a deep, passionate kiss on her lips. After a few seconds he pulled back to look at her. "Nea, I'm here. I'll always be here. And no matter what, I'll always come back to you." he said gently and softly. For a few seconds he simply regarded her, trying to think of a way to cheer her up. There wasn't many options in all honesty. "...I wanted to save this for a better time. When I have everything ready, but I think there won't be a better moment...." he said softly, looking down a bit then back up to her.

He took her hand in his as his eyes explored hers. "Dulcinea Celandine...I might not have the ring right now, but...will you marry me?" he asked with a weak smile.

Nea was stuck, she didn't know what else to say, how else to try an explain the ineffable. Luckily, she didn't have to. Bernardt pulled her closer to him, brought his lips to hers in a deep and passionate kiss. When they parted she searched him, taking each of his assurances and storing them away to remind herself with when things became hard again.

His next words, however, caught her off guard and she was unsure where this line of conversation was headed. What had he hoped to save for a better time...?

Bernardt's hand slipped around hers and she glanced down to it, surprised by the unfamiliar fluttering in her chest. She didn't realize it, but she had started holding her breath. Her full name, first and last fell from his lips softly and comanded that she look at him. He hadn't used her full first name since the day they met, she wasn't sure he had ever uttered her surname. His eyes searched hers and she returned the favor, finally getting where this might be headed.

Will you marry me?

A moment ago she had been ready to cry, and now she was sure she would, yet her emotions had been pulled in the complete opposite direction. If this really was a dream she sincerely hoped she would die in her sleep because she did not wish to wake from it. She eyed him a moment, examining him, his weak smile, his brown eyes, searching for any sign that this was some kind of a joke. But it was clear it was not. He was sincerely, truly, asking for her hand. He was asking that she be his wife.

Tears fell again as she began to nod, managing an overwhelmed laugh. "Yes, yes -" she finally got out, "Of course I will marry you."

As for the ring, it didn't matter. She didn't need a ring. She didn't need anything else if she had him. Hell, they could go and live out in the woods for all she cared as long as they were together. Nea closed the distance between them and placed an affectionate, loving kiss on his lips, and when she pulled away she couldn't help but joke, "I can think of worse things than being your wife."

Without even realising it he was holding his breath. He pretty much knew the answer yet there was still that overwhelming doubt in his mind. When the tears streamed down and the words escaped her mouth he actually let out a sharp exhale as he threatened to laugh. The relief and joy of her words hit him like a carriage.

She came in and pulled him in for a kiss. He didn't resist at all. She finally broke to make a joke which sent him over the edge. A hearty laugh escaped him as he tilted his head backwards, all that stress and nervousness leaving him with the laugh. He pulled her in for a kiss again before breaking once more. "I'm sure there's better things as well but let's not think about that." he joked right back. His arms wrapped around her and pulled her into him to hold her as tightly and closely as he could.

He finally stood up and spun with her in his arms, a smile stretching from ear to ear only disappearing to shower her in kisses. This was probably the happiest moment in his life.
