Forays into the Lantheri Wilds are often ill advised under a myriad of legends and tales of death, suffering and tragedy. For the most part, such myths are truth. It is indeed a place of danger where most all creatures wish to devour interlopers…most of the time being very successful.

Malagith was not an ordinary elf. He had been living on the fringes of society for decades…no, well over a century at this point. His talents in magic lied in the realms of illusion, shadow, divination, and teleportation. If he had chosen the path of an arcane thief, he would have been very successful indeed, but Malagith had no desire to steal from others. He saw no thrill in such pursuits. In short, such activities were beneath him. Malagith’s eyes were looking toward pursuits that impacted his people. The plight of the elves was a travesty to him and many other elves of Avsolom. He wished to understand what happened to his once great people and how to get them back to where they once were…including discovering a remedy for the sickness that was beginning to overtake his mind as he continued to age.

Part of this effort, as it had been for nearly a century, was to take “forays” into the Lantheri Wilds. It was always a risk and returning was never a surety. However, the magics that Malagith employed were centered around surviving those dangerous forays. So his luck had not run out…yet.

It was near midnight. The forest was teeming with life. The shadows atop a massive tree branch rippled and then suddenly shifted and parted for a cloaked form. This was one of many places that Malagith had committed to memory over the years that provided long shadows at the midnight hour and was not home to predators of the Lantheri Wilds. The elf peaked from underneath his hood and then promptly pulled it back. His normally green eyes had now shifted to the pitch black of night as the magic adjusted his eyes to see in the gloom as if it were daylight. While traveling in the Lantheri Wilds at night was very dangerous for most, it was the safest time for Malagith to be active. While the predators were numerous, the shadows were at his beck and call—this natural aptitude and bent towards the shadows of the Myst provided the elf with a tremendous amount of knowledge in the arts of shadow and illusion.

Peering into the darkness, the elf’s body slipped into the form and shadow and whisked across space and time to another shadow resting in the distance. His blackened eyes scanned the area and found another place of looming darkness, instantly traversing the space between them. As he crouched against the base of a massive tree, a six-legged predator rounded the corner and began to sniff the air. But Malagith was not one to muse if the predator would find him…it was when. So Malagith never stayed around long enough to find out. With another ripple, the shadows parted and sent the elf a hundred meters away to yet another massive tree in the distance. Malagith knew the beast would want to know where his would-be prey was, but Malagith would be long gone…tracking teleporting prey was not an easy task.

Malagith slipped through the shadows like a wraith: dark, silent and leaving little evidence of his passage. Deeper into the Lantheri Wilds he went until he came to a small clearing. In the clearing, it was clear it was once a small settlement. At this point it was grown over, but this was yet another discovery that needed to be explored. His dark eyes scanned the area for others, but turned up nothing. He could make out the largest structure in the settlement and what appeared to be a door, grown over by thick vines and weeds. He would not go until he was certain he was alone, so he waited…

The dark was quiet save for bugs and the quiet whistle of the wind against the trees. Even the most dangerous predators moved without making a sound. Maybe it was a person's imagination, but as Malagith got closer and closer to the settlement ahead of him he'd begin to hear something. The faintest echo at first, but if he listened more carefully he'd hear a beautiful song just over the sounds of the forest. It sounded like someone singing, though there didn't appear to be any words. Yet, it also wasn't quite a whistle or a hum either. One thing though, it was pure. It was like sweet honey that flowed smoothly across one's ears.

The owner of the voice was a woman, which could be assumed by the femininity of the tone. But this woman was no ordinary person, for she in many ways was not one. That wasn't to say she wasn't human or Elf, for by technicality her parents were both fair folk. This particular Elven child however was born on the other side of the world, or rather, in another reality of it. Lorelei, as she called herself, was born in the Myst realm. She grew up there. She lived there. And that is where Malagith would find her today.

The reason he could hear this strange woman tonight compared to any other night was because the Myst was always in flux. Sometimes, it was stronger in places than others. Sometimes, the two worlds overlapped so perfectly a person could walk right over to the other side. However, doing so was dangerous because the moment those two worlds no longer touched, you were stuck on the other. Many a scholar had been lost to the Myst world.

Getting a closer look at Lorelei would show Malagith that she was far from any resemblance than his own kin, despite having Elvish heritage. Lorelei's skin was charcoal in color, mixing from blacks and whites down her body. She also had strange glowing lines almost like tattoos on her skin, but they were as much a part of her as the red hair on her head. The other thing that was slightly odd to see was that Lorelei was not walking on solid ground. She seemed to be hovering as she walked. And she moved in such a graceful way it was almost like she was floating on the air. Malagith wouldn't be the first person to ever come across lady Lorelei, for there were records of her sightings in even the Empire's lost tomes. They called her the Lonely Angel.

It was angelic in nature. It took Malagith a moment to make sure he was not hearing sounds and voices that were non-existent…again. But he was quite sure it was not imaginary. Glacing around, there was a small avian hunter glancing in the same direction, so to the elf, it was confirmation of his suspicion. Again, Malagith ripped through time and space using the darkness as his gateway to the next area, which deposited him roughly another 100 meters away. The musical sound was now closer. The old elf could sense the thick presence of the Myst. It was in mystical places such as this that the material realm and the realm of Myst began to blur. And there she was, some 10 meters away. He watched in silence as she moved and sang. The sound was mesmerizing, especially from this distance, but the elf had traveled these Wilds for decades, so he was aware that such enjoyment could quickly turn to death. For now, he simply studied her. His eyes glazed over briefly as the pitch black orbs “peaked” into the Myst. She was there, moreso than in the material realm. He determined that she had to be a Myst Born.

The Myst Born were never seen, but Malagith knew he was staring at one. They were never caught in the open, always gone before one could lay eyes on them…but Malagith was of the shadows. He moved through them as naturally as drawing breath. Getting close to creatures without them knowing was simply something he did often. If he had chosen the profession of an assassin, he was quite sure he would have been very successful, but he was no murderer—he was a scholar, a researcher and visionary.

For the moment, he was simply content to listen and watch…

The girl continued her song, being blissfully unaware of anything and everything that was around her. The sounds of the forest blended away to make room for her song and it seemed any that heard the siren's voice was memorized by it. But her words seemed, sad. As the song came to an end her golden eyes looked around aimlessly, hoping for something to appear that never would. A friend.

As if by fate, Lorelei would turn on her heel to move beyond a tree when its roots uplifted themselves and snared her ankle. The girl's song cut off and she shrieked, falling to the grassy floor. She sat up just as quick and began to try and pry her foot free, but the root had a will of its own it seemed. The vine curled up and grew at an alarming rate further entangling itself around the girl's lower leg. She shrieked again and tried pulling it off of her but the wood was thick and sturdy. And where it did bend, it stretched. It was like hard skin that could not be torn apart.

Struggling even further she began trying to kick at the vines only to end up getting her second leg caught now. She groaned, falling to her stomach to try and start crawling to safety before she was completely wrapped up in the hungry tree. But even as the tree came for her, so too would other creatures. Her screams were much more appealing than her song, for this forest was out for blood. As Malagith would soon be aware...they would not be alone for long.

The elf continued watching and listening, both mesmerized and curious. It seemed sad. Malagith understood sad from a large vantage – sad for his people. His eyes drew wetness as she finished her song.

Suddenly, the very forest seemed to come alive as the roots animated and began wrapping their thick length around her leg. His first instinct was not noble. This was not the first time Malagith had watched another being fall victim to the Lantheri Wilds. Many a night, he simply watched them perish and their screams drown out. Malagith knew it was too much of a risk to involve himself. He had the elven people to think about after all, not a foolhardy individual.

She was screaming. The magical voice that mesmerized the elf was now in sheer terror. Looking over his shoulder, Malagith had already laid eyes on the spot he would teleport to next and leave her to the Wilds. He would escape again. The elf was whispering to himself…

“You cannot help. Do not help her. The Wilds will devour you too. Do not help her…”

It continued for a few more seconds. His head shifted from looking at safety and looking at her.

Before he realized what he was doing, Malagith reached out with his left hand and closed his eyes. Where Lorelei was prone and victim to the vines was covered in long shadows. From those shadows, inky black tentacles emerged from the darkness. The perception from the elf was no longer through the eyes, but through the tentacles. The slick appendages began to slither around the vines as they had wrapped around the Myst Born. Malagith’s brow began to furrow as he channeled his mental strength into the abyssal arms. They began to unwrap the vines from her leg with sheer strength. There was a small opening where she could wriggle free. The elf knew he could not maintain that kind of strength for long.

He yelled from some 30 feet away, “Here!”

Lorelei didn't know what was happening. One second she was singing, the next the forest was trying to eat her. The Myst born knew such a thing was possible, but she was not in the physical realm for that to happen. She was in her own world, wasn't she? There had been a time when Lorelei could pass between the two with the possession of a rare artifact. But, such a thing was lost to her. She was home now. Home where she was safe. Yet....

Clearly she wasn't. To her surprise, some other strange power was at play and began to pry the roots off of her legs. Lorelei pulled faster with her hands to help them while tugging at her ankles to get free. She heard someone yell to her, and she didn't need to hear it twice. Lorelei crawled away further until she was able to get to her feet and run to safety. She found Malagith and crouched behind him like a scared child. Behind them, the tree tried to grab at the shadow tendrils only to slip away and fail as they vanished. It then searched out trying to find something to grab, only to inevitably retreat back into the ground.

Cowering into the man, she hugged his shirt and spoke in some gibberish language to him, "Þakka þér kærlega. Ég var svo hrædd"

As soon as Lorelei moved to go past him, Malagith caught her around the waist, and brought her into the darkness with him. The pair blinked through the shadows to a spot under a tree some one hundred meters away—the same spot Malagith was eyeing earlier. Both of them fell heavily to the earth in the shadow of the old tree. They were a bit in a spooning position, so Malagith picked himself up off the ground and said in elven, “Sorry…haven’t quite mastered the landing of that under duress.”

Malagith looked back up at her sheepishly with his black eyes and looked to where the pair just left from. Looking back at the Myst Born, he said, “Hold on, we are not out of danger yet…“

With that, the shadows rippled around them and the pair blinked another hundred yards away. From the exertion of carrying another with him, Malagith came to a knee when they arrived at the next shadowy destination…

“I…umm..need a moment…”

Feeling the man grab her and then essentially carry her into the darkness caused the girl to shriek. She clung tightly to him and screeched like she was being thrown off of a cliff. It wasn't until they hit the floor that she stopped. Grumbling in that same odd language, she rubbed her head which was covered in dirt and fallen leaves. The man would speak to her in Elven, but it was not a language she herself knew. She looked up at him with a quizzical face and tilted her head.

She -like Malagith- sensed something else around them. With another shriek of fright she came over to him quickly and wrapped her arms around his legs. He would fall to one knee out of exertion, causing her to cry out with alarm. "er allt í lagi? hvað er í gangi? "

Looking up from him she noticed something shifting in the dark cover of the trees. Lorelei shrieked again and retreated further against Malagith, until the strangest thing happened. Her body began to shift into his, as if passing through a wall. With a confused cry she tried to pull herself away but only ended up squirming into him more as if it was sucking her in. At the same time, Malagith would feel a sudden chill coming across his body.

But the odd sensation lasted only for a moment as Lorelei's body completely vanished into his own. What came next was a strong sense of pure energy. Malagith would not only feel well-rested, but he'd feel ten time stronger. Where was this power coming from? Had it come from the girl? Where was she anyway? Then, what came next after this surge of adrenaline was something far stranger. Odd thoughts and visions would peer across his mind: walking through a neon forest of light; dancing in the rain of a full moon; and being grabbed by Malagith from Lorelei's perspective.

Go. Fight. Defend us.

The voice was hers, no doubt. And it came from his own thoughts. The language was that of his own, almost as sweet as if she had spoken it all her life. Whether they were his own thoughts, Lorelei's, or a mixture of both, Malagith would have the sudden drive to get up and defeat the creature lying in wait. No more would he run and hide. Now, he was a powerful warrior protecting some beautiful princess in distress. And he would win.

They were safe…for only a few moments. The creature sensed Malagith a distance ago and he could feel the magical creature bounding towards him and the mysterious Myst Born. She spoke to him in her strange tongue, with a myriad of emotions seeming to swirl within her. The elf couldn’t blame her—it had been a chaotic last few moments. Malagith began to recoil from the woman as she seemed to go into some sort of incorporeal state, merging into his own body. His body began to shiver at first. But then the chill dissipated and something else replaced it – clarifty of power. There was Myst energy surging through his body. To the elf, it was as if the very night was under his control. He could not feel where his limitations were. It was as if the mysterious Myst Born had somehow turned herself into some of energy within him that amplified his powers of darkness with a seemingly endless reserve of energy.

The beast drew closer, but with the elf’s senses becoming an extension of the shadows, he knew exactly where it was. A vision of a foreign forest of neon luminance flashed before him. He could sense he was seeing something through the eyes of the Myst Born…her world, her perspective.

Go. Fight. Defend Us.

It was the Myst Born’s voice, in elven, clear as day. The elf could not tell if it was another symptom of his increasing madness or it truly was her—but he did not question it. They were both in danger at the moment. The beast was almost upon them.

Closing his eyes, the elf became acutely aware of every inch of the immediate area of forest, attuned to every shadow within his realm of ‘sight’. Closer and closer the beast came. Large black tentacles began to sprout from the shadows, growing in width and length. As if with a life of their own, they sought out the many roots that served as the woodland monster’s appendages and began to twist around them. At this point, each tentacle was as thick as a pine and as high as an oak with the strength of hickory—but the tentacles were far from coming from the natural world—they came from the Myst, oily, slick and powerful. Over two dozen of these monstrous tentacles sought the creature and found purchase at joins and appendages, wrapping and coiling around every inch of the creature they could find. The creature roared in anger. Malagith stretched his arms away from his body and the tentacles reacted, ripping roots, appendages, limbs and its neck from the rest of its body. The creature was slain. The elf’s eyes rolled in the back of his head and blackness took him from the exertion…

Using so much power had exhausted the elf. Though the power wasn't all his to claim, doing so physically made the man lose consciousness. But they were safe though. For now. When he'd next wake up, he'd have a very out of body experience. Malagith would find his eyes were already opened, and he was looking around every now and then to see what was around them. It would take a certain focus to control his body again, but it wasn't without some effort. Around him, Malagith would see he was no longer in the forest. Not directly at least. They were in some sort of run down jungle temple that had somehow survived the harsh weather and rain. They were up high, to start, though how they got up he hadn't a clue. He could easily do so with his teleporting ability, but how had he done it while he was asleep?

The next thing Malagith would notice was that the sun was just starting to rise. So he hadn't been unconscious for long. The sun was painting a lovely color or oranges and yellows across the canopy of the treeline and the birds were singing their chirping songs to one another. It was rather peaceful, something one could not normally say about the wilds.

The last thing Malagith would notice, and this was the strangest one yet, was that there was some odd feeling in his groin. It wasn't quite there at first for he wasn't in control of his body, but the more he brought attention to it the more he would start to feel this odd pulling. And with that, a sense of thought would come to accompany him. No. It wasn't his thoughts. It was his voice though. Someone was speaking through his own mouth.

"Wiggle worm. Wiggle worm. Wiggle worm."

The words and tone, albeit his own voice, were very childlike and singsong. It was still in Elvish, but as if he had gone back in time and become a child again.

"Wiggle worm. Wiggle worm. Wiggle worm."

His head would then move back to the front and Malagith would notice his right hand had gone into his pants and was playing around with his....little elf.

Consciousness was dawning on the elf. He wasn’t sure how he had come to be among the ruins, but he was sure this was no dream. Looking down, it was an odd sight with the words he was speaking and his accompanying physical actions—it was a sort of possession. Panic filled him. It wasn’t so much what was happening, but the very idea he had lost control of…well, himself.

His mind honed in, feeling the second presence within him. Forcing the words from his own mouth and mentally projecting the same message, Malagith said in a tone that was both gentle, yet commanding, “That is enough, friend…”

The elf began to slowly feel control of his faculties again and patiently waited to see how the mysterious Myst Born would respond…
