The late hours of afternoon had spread the miles until Koku was all but ready to try once more finding a beast that would carry her the long distances she trod. Unfortunately she knew that line of search would only lead to disappointment and she had enough of that already. Once the animals smelled her they reacted in one way, violently. Even with the heavy scents and wards she managed to lace around herself, when they made physical contact it was as if they could feel the shroud-tainted blood flowing through her.

A whisper of roasting meat and mead laced itself on the air along with the telltale signs of camp smoke and body odor. Koku's tongue flicked out, the fork spreading widely as she altered course ever so slightly and angled away from the road. One more flick of her tongue and she dropped to all fours and sprang forward with speed no onlooker would have expected from the woman who had been walking sedately before.

Koku flashed across a mile and then slowed her approach as the scents of animals and men grew overwhelming and she could hear the voices faintly as well as feel the trembling of the rocks beneath her as something heavy rolled across the ground ahead. Pulling on a few straps, she deftly loosened her gear slightly for ease and brushed herself off attempting to put the hood and cloak in place over her more obvious features.

With a deep breath Koku strode forward into the haphazard market which was not much more than two dozen carts arranged in a circle and men and women haggling, drinking, gambling, eating, and fucking at every glance of Koku's slitted eyes. She hid her face slightly, trying to make a bit less of an entrance as she passed a couple entwined and approached the nearest spit which had two men who seemed to be haggling with a third individual over the arrangement of trade in the small clearing. They stood near a cluster of four carts, and Koku had no desire to interfere with their negotiations until she overheard the dastardly high price they were attempting to charge the third individual for a quiver of arrows and a new bowstring.

Stepping slightly closer, Koku spoke softly, "I daressay you folks are lucky there are no merchantsss guilds about or you each might be missing an ear." She waited until their attention was drawn and then moved a step closer, "Perhapss I can buy them from you at a normal price and sell them to your customer and sstill make a profit, yessss?"

Taliha was feeling a bit under the weather, emotionally speaking. Had she broken a bow string back home she could have easily acquired another through trade, but this was the third one in less than two moon cycles. The wetlands were doing her no favors and she seemed to have taken a few steps backwards of late when it came to her adaptability to life in these strange lands. She knew what it was, it was the year of a gathering and would mark the first one since she had been outcast from her people these past seven years. Her recent mistakes would have made a child blush with embarrassment and shame. Perhaps there was a deity somewhere who had a special fondness for the outcast, the foolish, the reckless? Taliha didn’t hold with such notions and knew it was just happenstance and further mishaps could just as likely get her killed.

Wench, her blue dun snorted at the back of the wagon where she had hitched the mare as she counted out the precious coins for the merchant causing her to lift her head. The horse was pulling back on the lead strap, her eyes rolling showing huge amounts of white with her ears laid back causing Taliha to lose her count and stuff her coins hurriedly back into her pouch with the intent of going to her steed.

Even as she moved toward the horse she heard the voice of a woman addressing the merchant. Taliha continued to move toward Wench, uttering soft cooing noises but she followed along with the conversation. It seemed she was getting ripped off once more. With her right hand outstretched she caught hold of the lead and worked her way to the horse moving in close to her shoulder as her hand ran over her shout and down along the mare’s neck. Able to calm the horse, who had stopped pulling but still trembled in her flanks, she called back to the merchant and newcomer to say, ”Or, you could just sell to me with at an honest rate and save us all a bit of fuss”, her eyes went to the woman getting a good look at her and readily put two and two together.

Although her face was hooded she could see her form was off a bit. She couldn't put her finger on it just yet but something about the legs just didn’t look right. Raising her eyes to the woman’s face, however, revealed eyes that peered out from the depths of her hood that were definitely not your normal variety. They reminded her of a snake. Clearly Wench didn’t care for whatever she smelled or sensed from the woman. Taliha was more concerned how she behaved and would not hold the marks the Shroud had chosen to leave upon her. It was the most obvious explanation leaving her to assume she was of the Magi.

Koku smiled at the woman who was busy tending to the animal that seemed to have sensed Koku's nature slightly. Pushing more of her mind to maintaining a ward that would prevent the animal from spooking entirely, Koku did her best to speak with mirth, "I do ssuppose you could do that, but then I shall need ssomething for my troubless. Unless, of course, you want the guilds to find out about your little ssside marketss?"

Letting the men squirm for a moment as they tried to solve the conundrum at hand, she forestalled their protests with a raised hand, her claws showing more than she intended as the firelight struck them, "I'll put your mind at ease. I want nothing more than information. I'm tracking a beast, something that would have left a bloody mess of whatever it attacked and likely scared off any prey or predators around. It would have left little trail for anyone to find, perhaps some feathers. Have you seen any of these?"

When the men looked nervously at one another, the one who seemed to be mildly more courageous spoke up, "Our guides diverted us around some sort of carnage three days ago. I was only told it was gruesome and that something must have died horribly there."

"Excellent. Now I will sstay to ensure you fulfill this lady'sss request and then we shall consider our deal complete when you point me to your guides, Yesss?" Koku asked with her slitted eyes narrowed slightly and her voice revealing some of the venom.
